What was the role of women during the General Strike?

What is it with all of these what did us women do during all of those strikes?  Let me see; I believe we put potatoes on the boil, braised the meat, canned a few peach preserves, mended a few clothes here and there.  Tended to our daily business; spoke respectfully to our menfolk.  Decided to do a garden since money is short.  Our hubbies and we decided to have a conversation about how to cut corners.  

So, I guess we did all sorts of things.  Oh boy am I ever lost.  <looks up one path and down the other>
