  1. The South's economy was so reliant on cotton that they called it King Cotton. It was their largest export and when the highly superior Union navy blockaded virtually the entire Confederate coastline, their main source of trade was cut off.

By war's end supplies for the confederate soldiers were in such short supply that many were barefooted and food was very scarce.

Before the war, most of the nation's wealthiest states were in the south. Right afterwards, they were almost all on the poorest lost.

  2. very difficult for the people, as farms were left unattended, or run by the women, who were inexperienced at such work. the North blockaded the south which meant good produced on the large plantations didn't get to markets, in europe, and imported goods didn't get to the people of the south.  this meant food and money were in short supply.

  3. The south depended on agriculture and only had about close to 10% of all of America's factories, the South was REALLY poor during the war depending on funds from else where like Spain.

  4. Bad. Farms were burned and plundered. Plantations as well. What railroads as existed used for military and most eventually destroyed. Same about factories. Inflation was so bad it was probably worst in our history. Even worse than the height of the Revolution. Example a pound of real coffee cost $70.00 in 1864 and a Confederate private made $11.00 a month. An old joke about a private getting paid went like this. He got months of pay in Confederate money. Went up to an old man selling gingerbread and slapped down a $10.00. "Give me ten dollars worth!" The sutler promptly slapped the bill on the tray and cut exactly around it and gave him the rectangle. That was ten dollars worth.....People need to remember today that having the most to lose and the least resources to begin with, the south suffered more than the north in every way by percentage. From human casualties through economic damage. And both sides were made up of Americans, so America suffered either way.....The percentage argument is valid through out our history. People don't realize by total casualties by percentage of numbers engaged the bloodiest war in our history was an Amerindian war back in the 1600's, King Philips war. And our bloodiest foreign war by percent was the Mexican War.....

  5. During the Civil War the South had several advantages... their strong economy, prestigious military academies, and agricultural connections. While the South was an agricultural union the north was an industrial empire. The south made most of the money through their farming. Because of their economy they could support their soldiers and deploy from the academies. Good luck!

  6. Unlike the North which was rapidly industrializing, the South was almost entirely agricultural before and during the Civil War.

The South had an agricultural economy that was very similar to feudal Europe.  Much of the fertile land was owned and controlled by vast plantation estates owned by wealthy families.  Similar to the serfs of the Middle Ages in Europe, slaves were owned to farm these huge estates.  Individual yeomen farmers existed who owned their own smaller, private estates, and owned either only a few or no slaves.

The primary crop grown was cotton, of course.  Also sugar cane, rice, and corn were major crops.

    Hope this helps,

    Peace!

  7. The south depended on agriculture (hint of why they had slaves) when the men left there was really no one to take care of things because in most situations the slaves started running off. Thats why it became so bad. Then after the war you had "carpetbaggers" and "scalawags" . The Souths economy took a while to recover

  8. During the Civil War? well a lot of men went off to the war and most of the farms were left unattended, so the ecomony halted
