What was the state of religion in the communist Russia? Were people allowed to worship?

If I remember correctly, Stalin allowed people to go to churches during the WWII. Did that continue afterwards?

  1. u were allowed to be either russian orthodox or muslim and if you were anything else u kept it secret. It was not good being a jew because stalin had just started to build concentration camps in siberia when he died. Yes people did go to those churches.
