Liu Xiang injured before his first race.  For Americans, imagine if the Olympics were in the U.S. this year, and Michael Phelps were injured before his first preliminary.  Liu Xiang's injury was 10 times that bad since Phelps only gets as much attention as he does during the Olympics, but Liu Xiang is China's most popular athlete since 2004.

And Liu Xiang's dramatic withdrawal from the hurdles. I couldn't imagine how deafening the silence of 90,000 people at the Bird's Nest would be like. With all the hopes of the Chinese for their greatest athlete collapsing in an instant.
