How much time passed between the British declaration of war and the Canadian declaration of war? How did this contrast with the declarations of war in 1914? What did this suggest about Canada's independence?

  1. Britain declared war on Germany on Sept 3, 1939.  Canada declared war on Sept 10, 1939.  There were two primary reasons for the one week difference.  First, Canada's parliament debated the merits of once again going to war.  Second, and quite likely the real reason was the fact that at the time war was declared, it was United States law that no country at war could be supplied with equipment by the United States.  The seven day delay in Canada's declaration allowed time for procurement contracts to be initiated.

The US law was recinded very shortly afte the war began.
