  1. No sword is the best.

The Rapier was designed for thrusting attacks, which it excelled at.  However, it was not a battle weapon because it could easily become stuck in an enemy, leaving you open to another enemy.

The Katana was designed for slicing, and can serve either as a Battle or dueling weapon equally, however, it is not as suited for thrusting because the force of impact was not direct, as the Katana has curvature.

The Nodachi was a longer version of the Katana, and was called the "Horse Killer" or "Horse Slicer" due to it's use to cut the legs out from under passing horses in battle.  A dangerous weapon, is was significantly heavier than the Katana.

Also in the Japanese swords category was the Wakizashi.  It was a short secondary sword (when worn together with the Katana was called Daisho, and allowed to be worn only by the Samurai).  It's uses varied greatly.  It was almost always worn, whereas a Katana was generally taken off indoors due to the narrow hallways generally found in Japaese homes.  The Wakizashi was often used in Seppuku, and also served as a great "anti-assassination" sword, as it's smaller size led to greater defense, as well as the fact that it was almost always worn.  It is also famous for being used by Musashi and other two swords users as a secondary sword.

The Saber was designed for slashing, but could be used for thrusting.  Used often from Horseback, the Sabre was excellent for gallop by slashing to infantry, but on the ground, the lack of momentum normally granted by being on horseback made the Sabre awkward to weild.

Longswords used in Europe were cutting and thrusting implements, but slashing was almost out of the question.  Often one handed, the Long sword was a dangerous weapon against unarmored or lightly armored opponents.

The Broadsword made up for any power disadvantages its smaller, Longsword cousin lacked.  However, with this came a practical neccessity for two handed holds, making it a slower weapon.

Smaller weapons like daggers and knives included the Japaese Tanto, used often for assassination or Seppuku (ritual suicide), and the Main Gauge, used either for two sword fighting, but also at times for assassination.

  2. no sword is the best

each and every weapon used in combat was designed specifically for the purpose it needed to serve and the conditions of the battlefield.

on a classical European battlefield a katana would be useless against heavy plate or chain mail armor but on a Japanese battlefield a broadsword was way too bulky and hefty too handle compare to the finer katana.

each was made for a purpose and served it's purpose well, but there's no way to compare them

  3. Shinobi Katana.
