I would pick the British Empire. At one time or another it controlled Canada, the North American colonies, a few islands of the Caribbean, Southern Africa, the Indian Sub-continent, the Malay Peninsula, Northern Borneo, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and many other territories.

The largest empire ever in total land mass was the British Empire in 1922.  Second was the Mongol Empire in 1268, which is the largest contiguous empire ever.
