  1. Go to www.wikipedia.org

  2. The first plane they had built was a glider that measured 16 feet from wing tip to wing tip. It cost them $15 to build it. The gasoline-powered plane they flew at Kitty Hawk cost them less than $1000 to build.

  3. They called it the Wright Flyer.

Gliders were invented WAY before the Wrights ever flew.  Their main innovation was developing an engine that was light enough to be put on an airplane.

  4. Correct, it was a glider and they tested ideas with it before they designed and flew their powered airplane, which later became known as the "Wright Flyer". The first glider was flown as a kite in 1899. See http://www.first-to-fly.com/Adventure/Wo... and http://www.first-to-fly.com/Adventure/Wo...

  5. All the Wights aircraft were called flyer's. Back in those days aviation was very primitive and knowledge was infantile at best. First the Wrights started off with gliders. The designed the asymmetrical wing we know and use on most aircraft today (with the exception of some military aircraft that have symmetrical wings). they then had to create an engine in their shed out in the desert. Once this was done they created the aircraft that was to be the aircraft used in the first powered flight. At first this went under a flyer number but was later renamed to the Wright Flyer.
