I'm doing a bit of research for a character in my novel. It's the mid80s and the character is the class gossip in high school. I keep picturing her with those BIG glasses.

Those BIG glasses where the lens was big and round (or octagon) and real glass and the frames reached from the top of your eyebrows down to the middle of your cheek and just as wide from side to side. And sometimes the arms of the glasses joined the eyeframes either at the middle or near the bottom and curved. Sometimes the lenses were tinted pink or blue? The nerdy girls in 80s movies would wear these.

Anyone even know what I'm talking about?

What were they called? Did they have a nickname? This is driving me nuts.

  1. I work in optics, but I don't know any nickname for them. I just call them 80's glasses and usually people get it.

  2. I know what you are talking about alright. I've been selling them since 1970...

Those inverted frames of the early 80's with the temples at the bottom sure were hidious things , but I don't recall them having a nickname.

They looked like the windshield of a '59 Chevy , but sorry...can't think of a name that was used for them at that time. Except that everyone called them their " upside down glasses"
