  1. During the Elizabethan era, it was not found suitable for women to act, therefore, men played all the parts- even women roles. However, these roles were more commonly played by younger men (in their early teens) before their voices had broken in. The only exception to this would be if the main character was a women or important heroin, whereas a more experience male would play the part. If the role was more girlish, (that of Juliet in the Shakespeare tragedy "Romeo and Juliet") than a younger boy would be used.
