What was up with the Penn vs Sherk fight?

the round ends and Penn tells the ref that Sherk's done so the ref calls the fight over. what was up with that. Sherk got saved by the bell. and for the ref to listen to Penn after the bell rang, isn't that strange?

even if he was saved by the bell...sherk would of definitely got destroyed the next round...he didn't even complain about the fight being stopped early...it kinda looked like he was glad it was all over....but of course there's gonna be controversy...and I'm pretty sure will be seeing part 2 to all this

Penn was just being cocky. Sherk was done. Even if Penn didn't do that the ref would have still called the fight. BJ Penn, when focused is the best fighter in the UFC.

The fight may have been called early, but Sherk had a 0% chance of coming back to win and may have been injured seriously if he continued, so it irrelevant.

What I've read online is that Penn DID tell the ref that Sherk was done and it was then that the ref ended it.

I would rather have had it be Sherk himself that decided not to come out for the 4th round, but overall it DID look like he was getting the worst of it for the first 3 rounds (especially at the end of the 3rd round).

Does anyone know what the deal was with Sherk's right hand? The announcers kept pointing out that he was favoring it and not putting it to use.

All in all, I thought it was a good fight. Sherk didn't really complain about the final outcome and actually appeared relieved that it was over. If he was complaining, that would have been quite a different story.

I thought it was bullshyt the same thing happened with  GSP VS Hughes 1 when he literally knocked hughes out to the point where he was stupid and didnt noe what happened but since the bell rang HE was saved but the samething happend to sherk and its his win even though he has already won the fight the ref didnt stop it therefore he could keep goin and he kept punching after the BELL rang WTF...but he didnt complain so its cool but WTF was up with sherk he wasnt shootin he wasnt fakin a shot he wasnt punching with his right hand he wasnt doin anything in the fight but being a god dam punching bag

not sure they called it  cause penn said so but in my experience you have the full rest period until you are requried to answer the bell sherk wqa sin alot of trouble and may very well have been done but i think he should have been given until the bell to deciede

Sherk said no more. It was a "saved by the bell moment". it was going to go another round but Sherk said he was done. He looked at the ref and shook his head that he was done.

Not only was this fight completely boring watching Penn just Jab Sherk to death, Sherk was fighting stupid and made Penn look like the greatest fighter ever. Which might be so but Sherk shot in like 2 times the entire fight, and missed about every punch with his tiny arms. Sherks biggest strength is taking guys down and not letting them move and just wearing them out that way, and then getting an easy submission or KO with his crazy stamina. Sherk got the h**l beat out of him and he needs to fight with a little less emotion and stop going for that 1 punch KO against a guy who punches himself in the chin before each fight. If this fight went into the next round Penn would of easily KO'ed him or he would just take him down and break his arm. The ref did him a favor not letting this continue.

Penn dictated the fight and Sherk didn't play to his strengths.  Sherk is a great wrestler and yet he insisted on a stand up striking game, playing into Penn's game plan.

sherk said he could not continue as you may have noticed the lack of protest from the sherk camp Sean was hurt and beat watch the post fight interviews sherk will tell Penn was being a good sport about it they even invited sherks camp to train and it was accepted same as in the pulver fight Penn is very respected in the community everything else sell tickets

I think he Yamasaki was going to call it anyways,  but the bell just happened to ring at the same time.  Never the less Scherk was not trying to get up and unresponsive,  it was a good stoppage and I did not hear anyone complaining.  Scherk got heart and a good chin but he was taking heavy shots and was done.

Penn KOed Sherk with that knee and proceeded to pumble his face. All of this occured before the bell. It was over. After that knee Sherk was destroyed.

I tend to agree with your assesment.  It sure looked like Penn called the fight himself.  UFC will spin it like the ref went after the bell and Sherk couldn't continue but it was strange to say the least.

the fight was not stopped during the round, period! sherk was saved by the bell. he should have had the whole rest period to get his head together. if the ref would have stopped it after the rest time i would have been ok with that, but it was stopped right after the bell rang. that is c**p. yes i'm a huge sherk fan but he should have been given his time after the bell rang to get ready for the 3rd round.

Sherk was done.  Listen to his post fight interview with Rogan.  Rogan asked him about the stoppage and he didn't even know what happened.
