    Yeah.  Before semis they used trains to move all goods.

  3. You don't have to go vintage.  The trucks used before semi were your standard box truck or flatbed truck.  You still see their descendants on the road today in any truck that isn't a semi tractor.  

    The semi design was invented to carry more with 1 truck.  It also proved to be a boon in that you only need one power plant.  You didn't need a whole truck for different cargos, just swap trailers.  Also you can keep that expensive track or moving and making money while the trailer sits getting loaded.

  4. Big Wagons hitched to horses or a tractor.  

    Then trucks with big truck beds.

  5. horses and carts boats  trains.
