What was used to attach blood pressure cuffs, before Velcro(c) was invented?

Question

Prior to pumping them up, BP cuffs are secured around the arm with integral Velcro(c) fastenings. However, these cuffs have been around long before the hook & loop fastener entered the market. Does anyone know what attachment method(s) came into play, in previous times?

Snaps were used as were zippers.
