What was your experience getting you tubes tied?

I am seriously thinking about getting my tubes tied, but no one I know has had it done. So I was wondering if you had it done, what your experience was like. Did it hurt, did you have a long recovery time, do you feel any different, are your periods any different? Thanks

  1. I had mine clamped, not tied.  But it was a good experience.  I went in the hospital for 7am, I was home by noon.  They went in through my belly button with long tubes, clamped and got out.  I had no visible stitches and the only discomfort I had was heartburn from swelling.  It lasted 3 days and then I was 100% again.

They told me not to lift my babies for 2 weeks but I was lifting the youngest the same day.

My periods didn't change at the time.  They have over the years though, which is normal...it was 12 years ago.

  2. Hopefully you'll receive lots of good answers for this, we are working on #4 and want to be done after that, so I am looking for an answer or two for this. Thanks.

  3. I had mine tied 21 months ago during my last c-section.  As the other answerer said, it didn't add to my recovery time (just added about 30 minutes to the c-section).  My periods have been a lot heavier but shorter in duration since.  My doctor tells me that anecdotally this is what many women report but there is no medical evidence to back it up.  The only "different" that I felt was that I was scared as h**l to have s*x for about the first 6 months until I went back in for my yearly check up because I sooooo did not want get pregnant again (2 kids is plenty for us!).  My doctor reassured me that not only was a section of each tube removed but the ends were cauterized and pointed away from each other and the removed sections were sent to a lab to verify that what was removed was fallopian tube, I wish I'd known sooner because that assured me I would not be getting pregnant again.

A good friend had her tubes tied a few months after a vaginal birth.  They went through the vaginal wall and she said she recovered pretty quickly.  She also says her periods are heavier since.

  4. I had my tubes tied 5.5 months ago during my last c-section...

I can't tell you a whole lot about the recovery, since recovery from the c-section is worse!  But I did experience some pretty severe cramping the first night... (I had 2 c/s before this and never had this cramping!) The doctor said that was from the tubes being tied.

I was worried periods may be heavier or painful after the procedure.. So far my periods have been a little heavier than they were.. Nothing crazy though... And I have had no cramping at all.

    Good Luck

edit:  Mine are clamped too....  Not cut/cauterized...  I hope this doesn't increase the risk of failure!
