What was your favorite Die Hard movie, and why?

definitely the first. mcclane was still just a regular smart guy in that movie instead of the pumped up superhero he became in die hard 2, and the setting was easily the best of the three movies. the script was very clever and atypical of action movies in details like his shoes, how he gets weapons, deals with enemies etc. in die hard 2 and 3, he just shoots them. there is more humour in die hard 1. most of all, it has to be that hans gruber is by far the best villain of the series. in fact, i reckon he is probably the best villain ever along with darth vader. he is much more menacing and interesting than freakin' hannibal lecter

In my opinion, the third one with Samuel L. Jackson playing the smart, hardworking, opinionated not wanting anything do with whitey that gets drawn into being the reluctant sidekick.  They have an odd, buy-able chemistry that just worked for the film.

for me it was the first one, seldom do movies made into series live up to the first one. not just the die hard series, but with most sequels it becomes a formula, trying to capture what the first one did. what made it the best one for me was being drawn into the story, not just watching a movie, the rest of the series didnt quite achieve that. I will say that the 4th is better than 2 and 3.
