  1. My favorite hunt was a classic. One to remember. It was in Louisiana on the opening day of gun season on a state wildlife management area. I had been bow hunting it for weeks, and was on top of a good herd of deer. I invited two close friends to make opening day gun hunt with me. I had all three of us a hot stand spot picked out.The night before the hunt, they came to the house to spend the night, so we could get an early start- they lived a good distance away-another acquaintance of ours dropped by to visit- a non-hunter that had never deer hunted- no gun, no license, no tree stand- when he go ready to leave, out of courtesy, I said, man, you might as well go with us in the morning-much to my amazement, he said yes!-He made a 120 mile round trip to a friends house to borrow a gun , a tree stand, shells and hunter orange- he bought his license and showed up later that night at the house.-Since I only had 3 spots picked out in that area, I gave him my spot to hunt- I put everyone on stand and went and climbed a tree before daylight that I had no idea of what the sign looked like around it-each of them killed a deer that morning and I sit in the tree with a black cloud over my head, moaning at my stupidy. But they were my friends and it was one of the most productive hunts that year.

The non -hunter killed an 8 point off my stand that he had mounted. When we drove back to the check out station, there was 3 successful hunters in my truck, and one big dummy!

  2. So far, all of them are pretty sweet, and during all of them I either had my dad's Mossberg, his .270 (not sure what it is), or my .303 Lee-enfield.

  3. Maine Moose 2006

    Remington 700 Classic 375 H&H Magnum

    Leupold VX II 3-9x40

Homeloaded ammo with 250 grain Sierra SPT Gameking

Harvested Moose one hour into hunt. Butchered for 3 days.

  4. My first duck hunt. In Maine 2000. I had never lived near ducks before and always wanted to hunt them.

    Gear: 18" Grumman canoe-Camo Duh!

Rem 870 Express Magnum 30", Carsten Extended steel choke tubes: Mid range in barrel

Rem 3" Magnum Steel #2 Nitro

My partner (Teacher/guide) had the decoys and he carried an Rem 1100

We bagged out rather quickly. Had a blast and didn't get wet above the waders.

  5. It was the first time I took a deer with a handgun. It was in scrub sagebrush country around noon. I had a T/C 45 Long Colt with 7 inch barrel loaded to about 700 ft-lbs with 250 grain JHP Winchester factory ammo. You get about 30% more snort from the closed breech design, so more snort was available from the standard loading in the T/C format, good for medium deer at medium range. A lain-up average Columbia Blacktail buck popped up and began ambling away about 30 yards range, presenting the best broadside shot I could have wanted. I put one through the boiler room (lungs), it struggled for about 10 feet, and fell down at peace. Not a bad way to go. As a Hindu Shivite (not Moslem Shiite), I then observed that I respected it's life and had freed it from material bondage in a humane way. Being a big guy, I simply dragged it back to camp using a rope from its neck at the chin to my belt, and put up all its meat properly pressure- cooker- canned in pint jars, each with a dollup of bacon grease, and a teaspoon full of seasoned salt. One inch cubes, loosely placed not quite to the rim. After top piece rocking, 65 minutes. Slow air cooldown. I had not nicked any gut, so there was no gamey taste at all. Later I would handload to 750 to 800 ft-lbs energy for a bit of safety margin. Ah, the good old days! Regards, Larry.

  6. My first Bear, was the best for sure. Heart pounding, buck-fever, and all the above was happening all at once.. I was in a blind and was falling asleep, then out of nowhere the brush behind me was rustling. I turned (thinking nothing of it) and saw a nice size bear. I was 14 at the time, so it looked HUGE to me, but only weighed out to about 350lbs.

I was hunting in northern california by the trinity alps.

I had my 30-06, and it was very cold outside.. haha
