My scariest trip was once from London to JFK. About 5 hours, there have been non-stop turbulences, so that even the stewards were not able to stand up at any moment. They gave us something to eat at the beginning of flight, then the turbulences started, and so therefore the stewards were not able to walk for the whole flight. So everybody had his lunch on the table.... Then, someone had a panick attack (thankfully, a doctor was on the flight). Thunderstorms all around.... I asked someone next to me if he had ever experienced something like that, he said "No"...... Even more scarier then....

  1. In 37 years of professional flying, the scariest thing that ever happened to me was the time I was on a 2-mile final in a C-118, which is a WW2 era cargo airplane with four (4) radial engines.  We were concentrating on the landing, when I felt a strange tickle on my arm, and looked down to see a huge black scorpion climbing up my arm.

I said something like "Bug, Tommy, God!  Bug! Oh, sh*t!!!"  Tommy, my First Officer, showed great presence of mind.  He pulled a huge Bible out of his flight bag, and snapped it shut on the scorpion, splattering bug guts all over the place.

We landed safely, and I went straight downtown and bought him the nicest big, new Bible I could find.  Thanks, Tommy.
