  1. Hong Kong, knackered after 13 hour flight sitting between 2 sumo-wrestler-sized Chinamen and had not pre-booked hotel I let a tout talk me into a 'hotel' in Nathan Road,Tsim Sha Tsui.  It was one floor (the 14th) of a firetrap tower, the room was 6 feet square and windowless and the 'toilet' was separated from the bed by a curtain.  The walls were paper-thin and, exhausted as I was, I was kept awake by a couple in the next 'room', whose bed shook so much from their exertions I thought it was going to come through the 'wall'!  At 6 am I checked out.  The advice?  If you arrive at Nathan Road from the airport, brush all touts aside and find your own place.  Better still, book in advance.

  2. The Shamrock Motel in Hixon, BC, Canada.  It was painted YA green and had such problems with mold and mildew that the bed linen was literally wet.  It stunk.  I didn't sleep all night.

  3. san fransisco's whitcomb hotel. On the internet the pics looked great. It looked like a swanky 1920's hotel. when we got ther it was beautiful right until we opened the door to our room. We got a non smoker but it was still stinky, in the bathroom counter there were burn spots and caulking everywhere, and the service sucked.
