  1. I don't know what brand to tell you to get.  However, be sure to get the braided steel water hoses.  They cost $10 more each but they are less likely to break.  A broken water hose from a washer can ruin a house.

  2. Any washer and dryer pair will work on a second floor, as long as there are a pair there now. If you're planning on adding a washer and dryer on the second floor where there were none before, make sure the floor can hold that much weight.

It's personal preference what kind to buy. I recommend a front load washer set because of the energy savings. My mother-in-law recently upgraded to a front-load washer and dryer set and she said her electric bill went down by 1/4 and her water bill went down by 1/2. She has a Whirlpool duet set, but has had some problems with it. My cousin also has a Duet set and has had no problems. My friend has either Frigidaire or Roper (I think) and has never had problems with hers either. I think that the front load set are heavier machines though, so whomever has to tote them up the stairs may get mad at you. :)
