  1. outdoor play in greatly encouraged in all weathers, thay have hoops, slides & other apparatus. 3-5 yr olds have physical games planned for outside. as for fine motor skills the older ones have name tags they can copy or trace, dot to dot games and less planned games like playing restaurants where they write the menus/take orders etc. the younger ones are encouraged with coloured pens/paints to make a picture that resembles something eg. getting a head, body, arms & legs in round a bout the right places etc.

  2. Legos, tinkertoys, blocks = fine motors skills

Slide, tumbling, jumping= large motor skills

simon says, follow the leader, freeze dancing all encourage physical ply, good luck

  4. fine motor skills are developed from things like drawing, painting, threading, sorting, sticking and even playing with playdough

gross motor skills are developed from things like riding a bike, jumping, skipping, dancing, climbing, running etc.

nursery is fantastic for all of these things including, learning to share and take turns and developing social skills

remember that young children learn through play and it prepares young children ready for school

  5. Through play....

Look up a theoriest called Mary Sheridan for milestones for physical; development.

Ways you can encourage Physical Play:

    Large skills:

    -Trikes and Cars

    -PE-Trampoline, climbing frame, tunnel,

    -Playing with balls and beanbags

-Running and jumping-to music, around playground etc.

-Action songs like "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes"

    etc

    Fine Motor:

    -Pencils and pens,

    Chalk play

    -Peg and board, pegged jigsaws.

    -Constuction like lego.

-Small actrion songs like 'Tommy Thumb'.

    -Threading

    Howto promote it?

-Talk to children-if explained appropraitely children will learn the importance of practising skills and realise they are getting 'bigger'

-Through fun and enjoyment-children at nursery are not in school so they shouldnt be sat doing worksheets everything should be through play,

-Talk to parents ands get them involved.

Skills are developed through repitition which is onyl done by making activities fun and stimulating and giving priase to encourage them to continuing trying!

  6. Have a gym class where each child is asked to perform certain actions....jumping jacks are good for improving gross motor skills.  Children can also be asked to jump up, forward, backward and to the sides.  Ask the children to squat down or to bend at the waist and touch their toes.

You can also have the children toss balls around which can help develop fine motor skills.  You can also have them run and pick up a ball and then run back and put it in a basket or something.

You can also have them string beads or play with matchbox cars which is good for fine motor development.

Gross and fine motor skills are developed by using them.
