  1. You could point out the harm that waste does to the environment, ie plastic bags are very much in the news, at the moment. (Somerfields bags have been compostable for a few years now, so I've been told by their shop assistants.)

Do the schools have a flower bed and or vege patch ? Waste food could be composted and so re used. Care would be needed in placement of compost bin. This would also show how much food is wasted. Recycling in action !!

3 of my children wish that gardening had been taught at school, apparently it makes biology more interesting.

Approach the council and find out what they actually do for recycling. This could become a project using statistics, graphs - maths. Ask how metals, glass, vegetation, plastics, cloths, etc can be broken down and re-used. This could bring science into play. Promote 'Free-cycle', its run by Yahoo and works very well.

  2. Run for a seat on the school board.

  3. build and eath ship!

I would first recomend getting can crushers and saving all the cans at school. Then, when you get a bunch bring them to your local scrap yard and they will but them from cash!

2nd, there is a new product being made by americans called papercrete.

you can make some at school and build stuff with it or build products and sell them back to the public. Papercrete is very interesting and it is all over the web. Do a search on youtube for it. It is very cool.

Plastic is very difficult to recycle and generate monies. In order to do so you will need a plastic bottle shredder. you can find them online but they only have big ones that are very expensive.

If your city doesn't recycle. Might I suggest tapping into the art program to make sculptures with waste:

As an environmental scientist and a sustainabilitist I always try to find direct sales or use. It is very important that we do so and treat recycling as a resource for the community.

I would also suggest you contact you city's department of public works for more info, but please try and find uses for the stuff on site and direct sales.

  4. Well, a school could do this but this means more money.. The school is already paying, using our taxes, to have them hauled away as is! Maybe those against it do not want more tax because so many are loosing their homes from excess taxation, yet our services have dropped! We find people moving to other States to get away from major taxes and little or unneeded or unwanted services. It is not just jobs but jobs that can allow us to pay tax and not loose our home! Now that Immigration has set their goal on placing more and more workers and ignoring spouses and relatives, it is bound to get worse! Bottom line is we need money as consumers to afford the extra tax that will come with environmental cleanup! We also know that the average Americans wage is too low and getting lower! When they can't afford any more government programs the U.S. goes further and further in debt! The average American now spends over 50% of their wage just for taxes! Earl
