What ways can someone get into working in TV (specifically camera work)?

Question

Not necessarily the 'standard' routes - my fiance's currently studying media at university, but has been unable to get a work experience placement this summer as his writing ability has let him down. This is all he's ever wanted to do and he's pretty down about it, so I want some ideas how else he could get into the profession to try and cheer him up.
