All of the above. Unfortunately, the proverbial American dream is done and gone.  There are no more frontiers, no more wide open spaces, very few places where you can stake out a claim on a gold mine. All you can do now is get a better job.

Same as now with a little more focus on children and family. Things weren't perfect back then.
