What ways has technology helped or hindered preservation of the environment?

Technology has aided in encouraging overproduction and use of technology.  Now that we are seeing the negative effects of this, we should hope that technology will help us find solutions to solve the problems that have been created.

Just think of all of the outdated and replaced tv's, radios, transistor radios, ipods, computers, medical machines and equipment and so very many automobiles that have been discarded in favor of up-to-date items. And I only listed a few. To update is to discard and to discard is to pollute. So, technology helps us but in terms of the earth it definitely does not.
