  1. Several factors play into the creation of an avalanche.

    When the weight of a snow pack exceeds its adhesive strength, it will fail. Too much snowfall on top of a "slab" will cause the top layer to slide. Also, if those conditions are happening but it has yet to trigger, all it takes is a vibration (pyrotechnic or sound waves) to cause an avalanche.

    There are two kinds of avalanches, but the most dangerous is the slab avalanche. It accounts for 90% of avalanche deaths.
