  1. use this services, but not free

  2. You won't find anything if you use your name, you need to search relatives who are deceased or born more than 75 years ago, so you;ll definitely have to trace back further than 50 years and unless you're really lucky, you'll have to use more than one website. Once you get started, it's actually kind of fun.

Find out information about grandparents and your dad's grandparents. You want  names (include middle names, their mom's maiden names),  birth, death and marriage dates (or appoximate year), and places (Cities or Towns and Counties).

Once you have your information, try searching these Free sites:

LDS website has free family tree software (Personal Ancestry File PAF5.2) as well as a huge database of  records and family history information:.

    http://www.familysearch.org/ (for records search)

    http://www.familysearch.org/eng/home/wel... (PAF software download)

This site will direct you to links that focus on a particular State/County.  Click on the State first, then scroll down and choose a County. http://usgenweb.org/

I noticed from one of your questions, that you're from Alabama, these links may help..

Its possible that you could find your ancestors in this site which has 250 million names in their family trees http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/...

Cindislist has pretty much everything you need to know about genealogy research and tons of links to sites (not all free, but most are) http://www.cyndislist.com/usa.htm

I found census records to be the most helpful when I researched my ancestors.  Even though ancestry.com charges a fee, you can still search census records for very general information and if you need to, come back here and post a question requesting further details for the record you found (or can't find). http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/c...

Here's a link to an index of names in a family tree with Elvis Presley's ancestors.  You could look through it and see if any of the surnames match with your ancestors.  There are 350 trees on rootsweb with his name, I just randomly chose this one.  http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.co...

    Good luck!
