www.govt.com.au might help you. If your a New Zealander the rules are different so make sure you find them out. You cannot become an Australian citizen if you haven't lived in Oz before 2001,  Kiwis can live here come and go as often as they like with no benefit entitlements, you can apply for permanent residency at a price$2000fee and you have to meet a criteria  but its not guaranteed. We have lived here for 5 yrs wanted to become citizens but have told we cant due to changes in 2001. You will need to remember you have to fund yourselves,get work and if you get sick all medical expenses will be your responsibility unless you take out medical insurance.Hope this helps.
