There are number of website available. But what I personally observed and liked the best website is www.playchess.com.  First of all you have to downloan a software free. Install it. Connect to the internet. Creat your user ID and Log on with your user id or play as a 'guest'. absolutely free. if you become member you will get additional benifit. Software is user fariendly. You can start play single game with your choice of player of the world. Once your rank increased you will be allowed to participate in the various tournament.  There are various 'Room' also availabale, This is a very gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooodd website to play online chess, starting from 0+1sec to any amount of time control.

um... games.com is probably the best I've used. They have every thing from parcheezi to battleship there. There might be some stuff about needing to be a member but you can bipass that go in as a visitor. It really is great.
