Against Green Bay Packers
After receiving two straight defeats, the players were indeed dejected, but the matters were still in hand and San Diego Chargers’ ranking in the American Football Conference (AFC) West division ranking table was still satisfactory.
Chargers had not lost any game on their home field, but a visit from the defending Super Bowl Champions, Green Bay Packers, who had not lost any game in the season, changed that course as well.
Packers’ thundering offence was too much for Chargers’ defence.
Although Chargers put on a strong fight and the offence tried its best to compete, but stopping Packers’ offence was simply out of the question.
Chargers marked the first scoring move of the game by getting a touchdown in the first quarter, but Packers responded by scoring three within the next 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Chiefs managed 10 points, while Packers got seven.
The deficit was further reduced as Chiefs got a touchdown in the third quarter as Packers only settled for a field goal.
Entering the final quarter, Chargers were trailing by seven points.
Both teams got two touchdowns each in the quarter and the final score, 45-38, settled in the favour of Packers.
Against Oakland Raiders
Three straight defeats were hard to digest for Chargers, but there was more to come.
They were passing through the season’s worst phase, which completely overshadowed their earlier achievements.
When Oakland Raiders visited, the misery increased.
Chargers were the first ones to score in the game.
In the first quarter, they took three points by scoring a field goal, which was followed by a touchdown from the Raiders, who got 10 points in the second quarter without conceding any.
Chargers scored two touchdowns in the third quarter while giving away one to reduce the deficit to seven points.
No scoring move was made in the final quarter and the final score settled at 24-17.
At Chicago
Chargers’ losing streak had stretched to four games when they visited Chicago to play against the Bears.
Bears did not face noticeable resistance in handing over Chargers their fifth straight defeat.
Both teams got a field goal each in the first quarter. Bears got a total of four touchdowns in the next two quarters while Chargers could get two.
Chargers managed a field goal in the final quarter as the final score settled at 31-20.
Against Denver Broncos
Chiefs had earlier beaten Broncos, but they result was otherwise when these two teams faced each other again.
It was a close encounter in which both the teams were neck and neck for most part of the game, but Broncos held their nerves in the overtime to get the victory.
Chiefs got a field goal in the first quarter.
Both the teams scored a touchdown in the second quarter, while they both settled for a field goal in the third.
Broncos scored a field goal in the final quarter to level the score and send the game to overtime where they managed another field goal to grab the victory.
It was the sixth straight defeat for Chargers.
Chargers’ quarterback, Philip Rivers, said after the game:
"There's nothing I can say to make it sound good. It's about as rough as it gets."
