What went wrong with San Diego Chargers in the 2011-12 season – NFL Special (Part IV)
Continued from part III...
At Jacksonville
Chargers’ record was 4-7 and they had badly hurt their chances of reaching the postseason.
What followed after the six-game losing streak was shockingly impressive game-play by the Chargers, but they still could not make it to the playoffs.
They snapped their losing skid when they travelled to play against Jacksonville Jaguars.
Quarterback, Philip Rivers, was surprisingly amazing against Jaguars and finished the game without throwing any interception. He gained 294 passing yards and got three touchdowns while receiving a passer rating of 146.1.
Chargers got 10 points in the first quarter without giving away any.
Both the teams had two touchdowns each in the second quarter while Chargers managed a touchdown each in the next two quarters to seal the victory.
The final score settled at 38-14.
Against Buffalo Bills
The victory against Jaguars provided Chargers the much needed boost.
They played the next game against the Buffalo Bills, who could only manage 10 points in the game and that too in the third quarter.
On the flipside, Chargers scored seven points in the first quarter, nine in the second, 14 in the third and seven in the final quarter as the final score settled at 37-10.
Against Baltimore Ravens
Chargers’ defence was on a roll while the offence had also found its rhythm.
Against Baltimore Ravens, Chargers took the lead in the first quarter by scoring a touchdown.
In the next quarter, Chargers got 10 points while Ravens managed seven.
Chargers got 14 points in the third quarter without conceding any while they got a field goal in the final quarter and gave away seven points.
The final score settled at 34-14 in favour of Chargers.
At Detroit
The final two games were scheduled away from Chargers’ home.
Chargers were 7-7 when they played their penultimate game. The opponents were Detroit Lions.
Lions thwarted Chargers short winning run and secured 24 points in the first half of the game while the Chargers failed to manage even a single scoring move in the first two quarters.
Chargers managed a touchdown and a field goal in the third quarter, but Lions also scored a touchdown in the quarter.
Lions added another touchdown in the final quarter as the final score settled at 38-10.
At Oakland
Chargers played their final game of the season against Oakland Raiders and managed to end the season on a positive note. However, they could not reach the playoffs despite winning the last game.
Chargers and Raiders got a touchdown each in the first quarter.
Raiders were restricted to scoring only two field goals in the second quarter while Chargers managed two touchdowns and a field goal to take a handsome advantage.
Chargers got seven points in the third quarter while Raiders managed six.
Both teams got a touchdown each in the final quarter as the final score settled at 38-26.
What now?
Chargers started the season pretty well and won four of their first five games.
However, they lost six straight after that and the slump became the reason for their overall failure.
They registered a comeback and won four of their last five games to end the season on 8-8.
One of the main reasons to worry for Chargers remained quarterback, Philip Rivers, who struggled in terms of accuracy and faced difficulties in controlling his interceptions.
Now Chargers’ plans regarding the upcoming NFL drafts are yet to be known, but it is for sure that if they could repeat the performance after controlling the flaws next season they could easily qualify for the playoffs.
