  1. Some historians consider his worst mistake to be keeping the old cabinet, which was controlled by Hamilton, instead of installing his own people, confirming Adams' own admission he was a poor politician because he "was unpracticed in intrigues for power."

  2. John Adams really made few actual mistakes during his presidency, except for being John Adams. His principal failing was that he would stand by his decisions no matter what his contemporaries said or how unpopular his decisions may have been. Many historians, however, point out that the vast majority of decisions Adams made while President were in fact correct ones.

  3. Ah poor John Adams - - - - unremembered by a majority of Americans and spat upon by the bulk of historians the sad reality is that he was a 'mistake.'  He had a grumpy personality and was squat fat and bald none of which was all that wrong but America has always been image conscious and poor John was just too easily bullied & picked upon.  Adams strengths were his weakness.  His honesty his candor his dedication to hard work all worked against him especially when dealing with the 'Sainted' Thomas Jefferson who openly orchestrated attacks against Adams and did everything possible to besmirch Adams.  Another one of Adams great mistakes was that he actually believed that Public Service was simply that, Service for the Public, and that he should rise above political shenanigans and not try to back stab other Public Figures such as Jefferson.

Oh you want actual blunders - - - despite the condemnation of history they were few.  Suspending personal Liberties was a bad call, but Adams worse failing was trusting James Madison and not taking Alexander Hamilton'ss advice to strike a direct blow against Jefferson.

What is weird about History is that Adams was attacked for being 'an aristocrat' whereas Jefferson was celebrated as a Man of the People.  The truth was that lawyer/politician Adams was more proud of being a Farmer, and we are not talking just about owning a farm but working the soil, Adams favorite activity was bringing in the hay, the task and the smell of newly cut hay.  And Adams actively opposed Slavery which still PO's people and Adams did not believe in living on credit.  Jefferson meanwhile owned Slaves (thus assuring his popularity), lived on credit way beyond his means, and disliked hanging out with common folk.
