  1. The English were interested in establishing colonies in the 17th century. England was a land of many diverse religions and intolerance.  England encouraged "dissenters" to emigrate to the New World. For instance the Quakers settled in what is now Pennsylvania and Delaware, the Puritans settled in what is now Massachusetts, The Catholics settled in what is now Maryland. The French were more interested in furs. They explored and settled in what is now Quebec, the St.James River, the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. The Spanish were mostly interested in gold. They settled in what is now the American west, Mexico, Central and South America. The English based their claims on the earlier sea voyages of John Cabot and Henry Hudson. The French explored and settled along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, the St. Lawrence and Quebec. They based their claim on the explorations of Cartier, LaSalle, de Champlain, etc. The Spanish explored by overland routes. They based their claim in what is now the U.S. on the overland routes of deSoto, Coronado, and Ponce deLeon. The Spanish established towns and missions all over the southwest of what is now the United States. I hope that this has been a help to you.

  2. Mostly sea exploration to the New World and China.
