  1. Kamikaze pilots ramming their planes into the hulls of the battle cruisers.

  2. torpedoes from u-boats

  3. Most of the ships sunk during the battle were sunk by japanese dive bombers or torpedo planes.

  4. FALCON PUNCHES.

  5. Aerial torpedoes dropped by "Kates" and iron bombs  from "Val" dive bombers did the most damage.

The Japanese had prepared two new weapons for the Navy's use in attacking Pearl.

One was a revised version of its excellent torpedo already in use. It had to be modified to run at a shallow depth due to the 50 foot deep harbor. (Standard Japanese torpedoes ran at 65 feet below the surface) By adding fins, the depth was changed to make them useful at 40-foot depths. Some of these torpedoes were made out of existing heavy naval gun shells. This weapon was a surprise to the US Navy because it had thought Pearl safe from Japanese torpedo attack.

The other was a special use bomb made out of the 15" armor-piercing projectile used by Japanese battleships. With fins added to this shell, these became special use bombs that were especially effective in penetrating the American battleship's deck armor plating, and exploding deep within the vessel. One of these shells  hit an American destroyer, penetrated all decks, exited the hull, and exploded on contact with the harbor's bottom.
