  1. Insulation dielectric liquids and also some flame retardants.


  2. They were used for lighting strikes. Each time it struck it would light a fuse.

  3. PCBs were a type of oil used for their high flash point and good insulating qualities.  They were used in a lot of electrical equipment such as transformers.

    The problem with PCBs was when they DID burn they were toxic and carcenogenic, nasty stuff.

    There might still be some PCB transformers around but I think the use of PCBs has been phased out in most countries.
