For the most part, slavery on the continent of Africa was in part, the result of tribal warfare.  The winners generally took the losers as slaves and killed those they did not want.  It became a business when the Asians and the Europeans began purchasing those enslaved for their own purposes.  As the business grew, a number of tribal Kings struck deals with the slave traders.  Most of those taken into slavery and sent to the outer banks and North America were take from the river valley in Senegal.
