  1. As many volcanoes, tremors and little earthquakes, plus some small eruption. The problem with Vesuvius was that after a certain quite period of time after all those events, people were quite sure that the main activity was almost over. During a night, a thick poisoned cloud of very hot gas literally run down the volcano, surprising people sleeping in their bed. Subsequently, a very heavy rain of hot dust covered the whole village of Pompey, and people remained trapped  in the sleeping position. With time, their bodies returned to dust, but the outside remained hard. When Pompey was discovered and the "bodies" found, they filled them with a sort of clay. So what you see in Pompey is the jig-saw of old Pompeians. I hope I've been able to explain

  2. Thick cloud of black smoke, large chunks of rock flying through the air...

  3. smoke

  4. Like any other volcano, there were probably earthquakes leading up to the main eruption as well as smoke.

  5. The problem with Pompeii was that there was little to no warning, that is why people have been frozen in time by the heat and ash.
