  6. National Lampoon, Playgirl, Hustler, People, Rolling Stone, Heavy Metal, Ms. and Oui either started in the seventies or enjoyed their greatest popularity in that decade. I'm sure there were others but those are the ones that came to mind immediately. Esquire started out strong with a new editorial slant in the seventies, but turned into a rather conservative publication by the time the Centennial rolled around. Playboy benefited by the relaxation of censorship laws, but there was a boom in new men's magazines and Playboy wound up publishing their own version of a newer, hipper men's rag, Oui. There were several National Lampoon imitations, but none last more than a few issues, and the Lampoon itself was in poor shape by its tenth anniversary in 1979, but switched to producing movies and had a solid hit with 'Animal House' at the decades end, but that's another story.
