  1. Well; Roman, Persian, Byzantine, Mongolian, British.

I'd say these were the greatest empires (Not in any order)

But perhaps the Ottomans should be in there too.

In size order, the largest 5 empires ever are as follows.

British Empire - 36.6 million km² (under George V of the United Kingdom in 1922)

Mongol Empire - 33.2 million km²[1] (under Kublai Khan in 1268)

Russian Empire - 24.8 million km² (under Alexander II in 1866) - including Alaska

Spanish Empire - 19 million km² (under King Charles III r. 1759-1788)

Umayyad Arab Caliphate - 13.2 million km² (under Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik r. 723-743)

  2. In antiquity there were said to have been 5 periods of Mesopotamian hedgemony referred to as the "5 empires." This refers to the Egyptian, Assyrian, Median, Persian & finally Macedonian Empires. This pretty obscure and with the exception of the final two were modest in extent, but I'm not aware of any other widely known listing of empires.

  3. what is the standard for a great empire? economics? academic acheivement? its size? military? you should've been more clear

by the way, my personal list would be

    1.Britain

    First global empire

    Built the modern civilization

Open the begining to global society and capitalism

    2.China

Lasted for more than 2500 years

ALways has been one of the mightest + richest nation of the world

    <Number 2 at least>

No states or empires could remain their superioty for a long term as China did. Since fall of Rome Empire, China outpowered the whole Europe combined until 17th century.

    3.Mongolia

they had the mightest army at the time

their expansion was the most impressive military success in human history. Napoleon and Alexander seem like nobody compare to Khans

they were very poor and weak, and still managed to conquar the richest and mightest nations at the time, including China and Persia

    4.Rome

Built the foundation of western civilization

Managed to stay alive as a superpower very long time

It was possibly the first global society that various race and culture co-exist (um, some say Persia was the first. But I somewhat disagree)

5.Persia or 1st Islam Empire built by Arab people in 8th century

  4. perisan/ottoman

    greek

    roman

    british

    egypt

  5. Egyptians

    Incas

    Aztecs

    Romans

    Vikings

That's just my opinion though.  Hope it helps.

  6. Chinese

    Roman

    Ottoman

    Spanish

    British

  7. 1) Alexander's empire for spread the greek culture around the ancient world and prepare the world to be unificated.

    2) Roman empire. for set the Alexander idea true. And be the fundaments of our civilization.

3)Carlomagno Empire. for give the christianity for all people and fot this, give the clasical knowdeledge to german people.

    4) First islamic empire because without his influence we wouldn't have know the classical philosofy like Plato.

    5) Hispanic or British empire. the first, cause they give the hispanic idiom to half world opening a classical literature for others peoples and make occidental half world with his influence. and the British empire for the same to spanic but also in this empire was the industrial revolution and our world is in the present like it is for this empire.

Sure there are more empires but those are the most for me,

    A hug!

  8. The British

    The Byzantines

    The Mongols

    The Persians

    The Chinese Empires

  9. Egypt

    The British Empire

    The Gupta Empire

    The Roman Empire

    The Shang Dynasty

  10. Many sources give four empires - Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire, the Russian Empire and the German Empire.

This is somewhat misleading as far as the last two are concerned. Germany lost its overseas colonies and its Kaiser, but remained the "Reich" and embarked on a new wave of expansion in the 1930s. Russia lost its Tsar and some territory in the west, but regained much of it in 1945.

The Austria Empire collapsed with the end of World War 1. This Central European empire had existed since the 1400's, if I am not mistaken spanned from Macedonia to Austria.

  20. Interesting question. I'd guess at Roman, Mesopotamian, British, Holy Roman, Spanish. But I'm probably very wrong.

  21. Byzantine

  22. British Empire

Cannot think of any more- btw- why are they called great? From what I can see, they were all terrible, basically about rich, powerful people ruling poor peasants and taking land they didn't deserve. I realise it probably means great-big, why don't they just call them Big??

  23. Assyrian Empire- the worlds first truly large empire.

    Macedonian/Greek Empire

    Roman Empire

    Spanish Empire

    British Empire

The first Empire in history was the Akkadian Empire, the Akkadians split into two, becoming Assyria and Babylon, both of who had large Empires that would influence how the Persians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans ran their Empires.

Other great Empires in the ancient world were the Hittite, Egyptian, Elamite and Persian empires.

In the early middle ages we saw the Arabs build an Empire, and there was also Byzantium and the Mongols.

The Ottomans/Turks came along a little later, as did the Habsburg Empire(aka Holy Roman).

You then had the Portuguese, Spanish, British,Russian,Austro-Hungarian, Dutch and French building world wide empires....and the Belgians, Italians and Germans got in on the act too.

  24. roman

    ottoman

    british

    spanish

    austro hungarian

    wild stab in the dark

  25. aztec

    roman

    chinese

    thats all i got

  26. Well, for Colonial I'd say

    1. British Empire

    2. French Empire

    3. Spanish Empire

    4. Portuguese Empire

    5. Dutch Empire
