  1. The initiative of the Ming was to drive out the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, and place China back into control of the Han Chinese.


  2. Ming Dynasty's (1368 - 1644) initiatives include the following:

    1)  built a vast navy and standing army of more than 1 million troops;

    2)  major projects contruction:  Great Canal, Great Wall, and the establishment of the Forbidden City;

    3)  establishing sea-routes (through ZhengHe) to trade with countries like Malaya, Philippines, Indonesia, India, and ventured to as far as Africa.  Subsequent trades with Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch (in the 16th century), thereby bringing in lots of silver into China.

    4)  Encyclopedia of 50-million words, done by 2000 scholars from 7000 books.

    Arguably, the Ming Dynasty "created one of the greatest eras of orderly government and social stability in human history".
