They began play as the Chicago Packers in the 1961–62 season. The next season, they changed their name to the Chicago Zephyrs. In 1963 the franchise moved to Baltimore, Maryland and became the Baltimore Bullets.
In 1973, the team moved to Landover, Maryland and became the Capital Bullets; they changed their name to the Washington Bullets the following season.
In 1995, owner Abe Pollin announced he was changing the team's name because Bullets had acquired violent overtones that had made him increasingly uncomfortable over the years and changed the name to the Wizards following a contest to pick the name.
