What were the advantages or sea and land trade during the classical period of civilization?

  1. The sea allowed a great naval power like greece, egypt, rome and later italy to dominate trade because you could move large amounts of goods within a ship. Land trade was often difficult because technology was limited, and one has to cross the sahara desert in africa to get from the Eastern World to the West.


  2. Sea trade was much more important than land trade.  The cost of shipping something 50 miles overland was about the same as shipping it the length of the Mediterranean.  So, most major cities were on the coast, or along rivers.
