  3. Protection against bandits and invaders and an interlocked network of defensive places which would fight on their own but would get the help of their neighbours if things went bad.

    It came to life as Europe was pillaged, burnt, and knocked about by waves after waves of invaders. It gave the peasants protection in exchange of food, gave the warriors food and shelter they did not have to work for so they could concentrate on fighting and defending and becoming de facto the lord of the area, and promised those lords unconditional help from a stronger lord (liege) if they found themselves overwhelmed by the enemy against the promise to come to the call of that liege if he needed them. It also gave them protection from ambitious others lords who would not dare attack them as they became vassal to and thus protected by a stronger lord.
