  1. The first civilization in the Tigris-Euphrates valley was the Sumerian. Along with the Egyptian civilization on the Nile it was the earliest in the world. The Sumerians lived in several city-states. Some may date from 3500 B.C. The political unit was the city. Among them were Ur, Babylon, Uruk, Kish, and Lagash. The city-states had palaces and temples and had walls around them. Agriculture may have started here. The people were mostly farmers. The major crops were barley, wheat, dates, and vegetables. They raised cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats.  They practiced crafts such as jewelry, pottery, armor, and textiles. The Sumerians invented cuneiform about 3,000 B.C. This was the earliest form of writing by pressing a tool with a wedge-shaped tip into wet clay tablets. The tablets were then dried in the sun. Hundreds of thousands of these tablets have survived, They provide information about Sumerian politics, literature, economy, law and religion. I hope that this has been a help to you.
