The native peoples tended to be nomadic and lacked a full understanding of the meaning of land ownership and the restrictions that such a concept imposed. By 1675 Wampanoag chief Metacom had had enough and began the uprising known as King Philip’s War, almost wiping out the English population of Massachusetts.
