  3. answer: there is a very good book that covers the various waves of migration from England/Ireland/Scotland - starting with the Puritans.  "The Seeds of Albion" (I got mine from Amazon.com used).

    Puritans prized education (as long as it was how to read the bible and enough math to conduct business). Politics were based on the eldership of the churches - town hall form of politics.  Economic, political and religious were all intertwined - if you didn't attend the right church and practice properly - you were screwed.  No business, shunned by the community, put into stocks or actually jailed.

    For example - it was decided in one colony that people should not live alone.  One man was threatened with jail time if he didn't find a family to move in with within an acceptable time period.
