  1. The first colonists to America (on the Mayflower) were Puritans, who went to escape religious persecution. (from other Protestants) Penn. was meant to be a religioius state based on Quakers' (that's an insult, not their official name) religion.  Maryland was founded to be a Catholic homeland.
