  1. Things were so different back then that it would be a complete historical anachronism to compare them to modern times.  They still had to back federal reserve lending with gold so it was quite limited.  Additionally the money supply contracted by a third so there was no money to lend at any rates.  Which would make you assume regular bank lending rates were very high for those that didn't go bankrupt.
