  1. Its all about economics. Slavery was profitable, especially after the invention of the cotton gin. The social and economic system of the American South was based on slavery. Of course many of the slave ships were owned by New England sea captains. Sugar plantations in the Caribbean created a need for slaves. It was a convenient way for Africans to get rid of enemies by selling them away. Arab traders and European traders brought African slaves to the New World even after Great Britain outlawed slavery in 1833. It flourished and even increased in the following decades. It was profitable! Most things in this world are done for economic reasons. I hope that this has been a help to you.


  2. First off, many tribes practiced slavery (mostly to rival tribes captured in battle), so abolitionists faced a cultural bias. Second, many tribes sold these slaves to white or to other tribes, so their was an economic impetus. Third, in European controlled areas, plantation farming was used so the cheap labor of slavery was preferred.
