Question:

What were the major flaws of the Concorde supersonic planes?

We all know about the accidents that happened during Concorde commercial flights.

This question is only about the flaws of a Concorde supersonic airplane in general: what were its major flaws in assembly and performance? I think it was an amazing plane, still.

Tell me the technical stuff only, please.

Thanks.

  1. There were no major flaws in assembly or performance. The Concorde was too noisy to fly supersonic over land masses so it was forced to fly subsonic over land. The cost of fuel also took a big bite in economic performance as the Concorde's fuel economy was very bad and it was much too small to be economically viable for airlines to operate and make a profit with it.

  2. It was very inefficient fuel wise.

  3. biggest problem was the sonic boom which made it impossible to use on overland routes cause of noise pollution

was also low capacity and not fuel efficent making it expensive to run and making it costly to buy tickets it was 1000's of dollars and 5x higher then traditional flights

  4. The planes were getting old and in need of major repairs. The cost of repairs was too much and therefore rather than fixing them they were retired.

Many planes have been and gone over the years. Once they get too old thats it.

  5. The major flaw was in the design of the wing. Concorde's wing is basically two planks of metal held apart by tie rods. It doesn't have wing ribs and only a few stringers. The shape of the wing can actually be changed by changing the length of the rods and this was done with the first models because it had too much drag. The problem of not having ribs or stringers is that the wing is strong enough for the aerodynamic loads but has low impact resistance, especially as there is so much space between tie points. This is one major reason it was withdrawn from service and why it most likely won't fly again. The manufacturers finally admitted it was a flawed design...a tyre burst should never bring down an aircraft...and withdrew the certificate.

  6. Nothing wrong technically, it just never gained acceptance in the marketplace.  Too expensive to operate.
