  1. during wwii, the other allies saw how ruthlessly the soviet union was making a land grab over all the territory they were taking away from Germany as they plowed on towards Berlin.  Anti-communist americans were well aware of Stalin's desire to add to the USSR and set plans in motion to prevent the USSR from making a huge post-war land grab.  This was largely unsuccessful in Eastern Europe and led to the adoption of the US policy of containment, or the push to eliminate future communist expansion.
